27th February 2010, an 8.8magnitude earthquake shook Chile at 0634GMT from a depth of 22 miles. Chile President, Michele Bachelet declared it‘s a “state of catastrophe”. The 8.8magnitude earthquake is 1000times more powerful than the 7.0magnitude Haiti earthquake. More than 50% of total damage is to be in Santiago. This earthquake’s the 5th largest since 1900 by magnitude. It’s caused by the converging Nazca Plate and South American Plate, at 65mm/year.
This‘ the strongest in Chile since 1960’s Valdivia 9.5magnitude earthquake. The epicenter of this earthquake’s just a few miles away from the Valdivia’s.
By 9.30 p.m. of 27th February, there were 45 aftershocks. And at 11.34p.m. EST of 27th February, the death toll rises to more than 300 dead and 15 missing, and is to increase. More than 2million are affected by the quakes. A major bridge in that connects the northern and southern of Chile was inoperable due to the damage.
The earthquake sent tsunami warnings all around the Pacific region with places as far as Russia and Japan. Hawaii’s warnings were lifted after a wave smaller than expected. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated for a possible tsunami in Japan.
Countries sent their condolences to the Chileans over their losses and offer help to them.
In United States, President Obama stated they’re ready for all rescue-recovery efforts if Chilean government asks for and are also preparing for the tsunami, to reach the American Shores.
It could cause an economic damage about USD 15billion-30billion.
I think that people living in places of tsunami warnings should evacuate immediately, those in earthquakes to stay at open-areas if there are further aftershocks, they’d be safe from collapsing buildings. Everyone should mentally-physically prepare themselves. Every country should be well-prepared for future emergencies. We should also build with higher-quality materials and foundations so it’d not be easily destroyed by such disasters.
